TEHRAN (IQNA) – More than 1700 people attended Kuwait’s 21st Grand Quran Recitation and Memorization Contest.

The edition of the competition, held under the patronage of Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, had 1,729 competitors representing 40 public and private entities, KUNA reported.

According to statistics released by Kuwait Awqaf Public Foundation, around 27,000 individuals have reached the final stages of the competition with around 6,220 participants winning in the last 20 editions of the contests.

The Quran competition saw the participation of male and female competitors from different age groups. People with special needs were also allowed to partake in the contest, which began in 1997.

Last year, a committee was established to evaluate participation from citizens abroad with Britain being chosen as the starting point. There are plans to add more countries in the future.
