TEHRAN (IQNA) – Several people were killed as the US-led coalition targeted a Syrian town using internationally-banned white phosphorus munitions.

The attack took place in the town of Baghouz in Syria's eastern Dayr al-Zawr province, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Thursday. Women and children were among the fatalities.

The so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is supported by Washington, claim they are fighting the last remaining pocket of Daesh-affiliate terrorists in Baghouz.

Thursday's bombing marks the third reported coalition attack using white phosphorus after the SDF announced they had resumed operations following a break in fighting to allegedly facilitate civilian evacuation last week.

Washington has long been providing the SDF -- a predominantly Kurdish alliance of militants -- with arms and militants, calling them a key partner in the purported fight against Daesh.

The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be Daesh targets inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

Damascus has repeatedly denounced US military presence in the country along with what it describes as aerial assaults targeting civilian and critical infrastructure.

Damascus has repeatedly denounced the US military presence in the war-torn country as well as what it describes as aerial assaults targeting civilian and critical infrastructure.

The US coalition has also previously used internationally banned munitions, particularly in the Dayr al-Zawr province.

In June 2017, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned that the coalition was deploying white phosphorous bombs in both Iraq and Syria.
