TEHRAN (IQNA) – Six members of the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group have been detained in Iraq’s al-Anbar province, an official said.

Ahmed Fares, director of the western province’s intelligence and counter-terrorism department, said two of those arrested are commanders, RT Arabic reported.

He added that the detainees had been plotting to launch terrorist attacks but their plans were thwarted with their arrest thanks to the vigilance of security forces.

In late 2017, Baghdad declared there was no longer any Daesh presence in Iraq.

However, the terrorist group still maintains a presence in rural areas of Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Saladin, and Mosul.

The Iraqi army and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the group in various parts of the country.
