TEHRAN (IQNA) – Consultation helps one get familiar with the ideas ad thoughts of others, especially experts and pundits, benefiting from them and thus deepening and extending his thought and insight.

Quran Underlines Importance of Consultation

Given the limited scope of his experience and thought, mankind may not be able to make decisions at times of difficulty and when facing problems. In these cases, he can benefit from consulting with others and using their experiences and insight.

Consulting with those who are wise and have more experience contributes to one’s growth and refusing to benefit from it may impede that growth.

Consultation is not just for ordinary people but all people, no matter their status or thinking power, require it. God has even ordered His messenger to consult with others in what he does:

“Only through the Divine Mercy have you (Muhammad) been able to deal with your followers so gently. If you had been stern and hard-hearted, they would all have deserted you a long time ago. Forgive them and ask God to forgive (their sins) and consult with them in certain matters. But, when you reach a decision, trust God. God loves those who trust Him.” (Verse 159 of Surah Al-Imran)

In the Quran, consultation has been mentioned along with issues that are Wajib (compulsory). So just as they must obey God and say prayers, they should also be serious in consultation:

“… those who answer their Lord, establish the prayers, and their affairs are by consultation; who spend of that which We have given them.” (Verse 38 of Surah Ash-Shura)

Of course, consultation has principles and guidelines. We are not to seek advice from others and do as they say no matter what. Islam shows the path: First listen to others’ views and ideas and then choose the best: “Those who shun the worship of idols and turn in repentance to Allah for them glad tidings. Therefore give good tidings to My worshipers, who listen to the Words and follow what is finest of it. These are they whom Allah has guided. They are those of understanding.” (Surah Az-Zumar, Verses 17-18)

Consultation is a key factor in our progress and success, provided that the one whom we consult is a wise, experienced, judicious and trustworthy person.
